I think this is a fake quote that somebody made up for an Internet comedy bit, since it seems unlikely for Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney to have such uncharacteristically strong opinion on software version control, of all things.

Gabe, KiwiFarm started from the forum section of CWC Wiki (in fact, the name KiwiFarms itself is a corruption of “CWC Wiki Forums”), which was hosted on MediaWiki, so “not letting KiwiFarms host their own wiki” is a ship that has long since sailed.

I really fail to see how this has more abuse potential than hosting an independent wiki on MediaWiki, even if the content they host there is… not very nice, to say the least. If anything, there is more control against abuse since they would just be defederated.

Those darn celebrities, always ruining people’s fun on social media.

Totally fine, and I didn’t mean to impose, because at the end of the day, I’m just a normal user who shitposts and make dumb jokes here and there.

Gabe, a couple of weeks ago, nutomic was asking for ideas on a name for his federated wiki alternative project, I put forth my suggestion that I thought was better (also because I didn’t want it to be named after the bin chicken), but he told me, pretty bluntly in fact, that he is sticking with his original choice.

Am I bummed about it? Of course.

But it would be silly of me if I kept pestering him because he didn’t do exactly what I want, because at the end of the day, he doesn’t owe me anything.

I can make suggestions to him, but he doesn’t have to take them, I’m not his manager, and I can take no as an answer. (He could have let me down a little easier though.)

From reading your blog post, I get the impression that you are venting because 1. the Lemmy devs didn’t prioritize on the “improved moderation tools” that you wanted and 2. you are unhappy with the way they are running their own instance, which is kind of the point of decentralization that instances are ran independently from development.

Let me ask you a follow-up question to think about (you don’t have to answer me): You are putting weight into Sublinks right now, what’s to say that you wouldn’t have any disagreement with jgrim about the development priorities of Sublinks?

Lastly, sorry I never did the thing that I promised you to do a few months about moderating a comm on lit cafe, been kind of stressed and irritable recently and can’t really find the energy to do much creative writing. Sorry.

“GNU is Not Unix Image Manipulation Program Tool Kit” is still a better name for GTK than “GIMP ToolKit”.

It’s a name that will definitely raise some eyebrows in the less technically inclined circles. (and maybe a few “Pulp Fiction” references about “bring out the gimp”)

Speak for yourself, I first got on Lemmy to promote a movie, and the next thing I know, I was using Arch (BTW) and moderating an Android community.

I’m still not quite sure how that happened. This place.

As I said before, there is always a certain urge for people, especially smart people, to teach others what they know, it can get annoying sometimes, but it makes always make people so happy to share their knowledge with others.

Well, LW still shows up to my all feed, so I just comment on posts if it comes up.

Off the top of my head, LW accounts can’t see posts from beehaw, hexbear, or piracy communities on db0 due to defed/blocks.

I mean, I use my LW account for local and lemm.ee for all (because it can see more posts). They are just… different, although I am getting pretty annoyed at the mass of r/politics level politcal discourse on the LW local feed.

I respectfully disagree. On our LW Android comm, the discussion quality is generally pretty good, except when a post get on the front page, then the quality just drops like a rock.

Smaller (but not too small) crowd usually lead to higher quality discussions, that’s true on reddit(default subreddits are pretty much all terrible) , and that’s true here as well. (the turning point for quality decline reddit is at about 20K subscribers). So, I don’t think the "instance protectionism lead to lower discussion quality is true at all.)

Also, I think the mod tools here is basic but perfectly adequate. You can check our community’s mod log to see how much post removal/bans we actually had to do, and it’s not a lot. Also not to brag, but I think our weekly discussions are some of the best threads on Lemmy right now.

It’s not hard, I just tell our comm’s users that I expect them to act like adults, and most of them act like adults, and we just remove the post of the few who refuses to do so (they are like in the single digits over the last months) and our admins usually handle the trolls that requires site wide bans in literal minutes here.

I don’t use bots to mod and still do not see the need for it, because it turns out that if you cultivate a good culture in your community, moderation is pretty easy. That’s just my experience here though.
