So they should switch to element.io, or host their own forum thingie on a VPS somewhere. Why is Discord essential? (Hint: it’s not)
A ‘old school’ forum would be actually way better. Why? It is searchable with external tools, can be found with search engines and can be easily preserved and archived by orgs like archive.org
Then they could also just use a Lemmy community
Luckily discord is awful at filling useful information out of its history. So, unlike something like Reddit, dropping it for something else shouldn’t be a big deal.
Discord is currently the best for managing Communities. I dont see Matrix being even close to discord. Its partly similar, but lacks too much what makes Discord great.
bs. discord is absolute trash for anything but live chatting. it does nothing different from plain old irc with a bnc and bots. they just took irc and made it easy for stupid people to use and slapped voice comm on top; which also already existed. using it as an archive, broadcast and support system is like trying to use a hammer to screw in a screw. people just use discord because people use discord. just like people just use facebook because people use facebook.
if you want to manage a community, you should use discourse. it’s the most modern alternative. if you want a public chat, use any chat you want that supports public chat, the only difference between all of them is what level of privacy they provide.
What makes discord “great” exactly?
Kind of funny how this gets taken down and yet there are a plethora of discords dedicated just to almost openly selling Methamphetamine… shows you who holds real power.
Meth heads hold ALL the power!
It’s probably easier for law enforcement if those kinds of people are all in one place.
Highly doubt it. Postal inspection isn’t trawling through random Discords. No other LE is going to get involved with randos mailing like 8 balls of meth around.
5 bucks says they’ll create another Discord group called “Not Emulator” instead of learning their lesson
The lesson to learn is to not hype up shitty company’s products and invest effort into software for their fandom, not to do so elsewhere.
I dunno, emulating such company’s device so that other people can play games without buying said device sounds like a pretty rad idea to me.
I don’t understand why such big Foss things stays on discord
Because even some FOSS developers value convenience over freedom and privacy, unfortunately. Those of us who’ve spent decades warning about this get shouted down and told we’re being too puritan or ideological and that the proprietary thing just works and everyone uses it already so we’re wasting our time.
I get that these need some sort of access point in the normal web for the average user but it blows my mind these sorts of chats aren’t on the darkweb on a Foss app.
Reading the article, it sounds like this might be it for Suyu if the pastebin is to be believed. The development team kinda imploded and the code used the Switch SDK, which makes it toxic to continue development legally.
Discord goes too far, we need an alternative that is better than Discord.
And no, Matrix is nit even close to discord in my opinion.
Check out revolt chat. It’s an attempt to make a Foss clone of discord.
That seems to be pretty good
Matrix is the best choice we have. Embrace it or make better because we can only use what is out there.
I understand your view, but its still nothing that a community will love to adapt like discord as discord has too many features missing in Matrix.
If you want a successful and big community outside of coorp shit, then we need to create something new and better together and not put the load onto an individual person who wont be able to make it profitable.
I never understood the appeal of discord.
Like. It’s IRC with voice chat. I’m sure making a voice chat client is not trivial but weve had IRC for like 30 fucking years.
Because it does the things well gamers want. They want to play together, and talk together (voice chat), and stream showing them bossing or doing something IG. It does those things very well. If matrix gets seemless voice calling and video/screensharing at the click of the button, they would find it easier to make inroads.
It also has sensible defaults for managing users etc. and it’s effortless.
It’s not about features, it’s just about getting the basics right.
@ReakDuck so why not work on adding those features to Matrix, instead of reinventing the wheel in another closed platform from scratch? The network effect is by far the most important factor when it comes to any chat app, or building a community. Matrix solves the network effect by being interoperable, having bridges.
You’re entirely right. Idk from where this mindset comes and how to reduce the mindset.
But xdbk has a meme to this
Why you don’t think that matrix could be an alternative?
You can only join a single chat/channel. You may join multiple ones at the same time but the idea is more heavy with too much decision making while on Discord, you just join a server and have hundrets of Chat Channels together with voice channels to join and create. Additionally the survey on whay roles you want and what channel topics you want to see. Matrix is not even similar, its entirely different.
@ReakDuck Huh? When was the last time you saw Matrix? These are “spaces” you are talking about, widely supported in client apps. And I wouldn’t even see it as the killer feature.
Spin up an XMPP server, brother. The servers require a lot less resources & storage & the clients have a lot of diversity & on mobile consume the least power & data. These are great for decentralized chat & Movim or Libervia can be used to build communites with posts.
If you need coms for gaming, Mumble is a more than serviceable alternative with low-system requirements & low latency.
The old tech still works & is still being actively worked on. What we need is less churn in new, half-baked projects & more efforts into extending existing technology or building alternative modernized clients for those that want them atop these battle-tested technologies.
I wouls be happy to see a full Rust stack alternative to xmpp
If you think this wouldn’t have happened with another hoster where you just rent a root server and use some free software on top of that you don’t understand how the legal system works.
Do you think the entire world is under US laws? Besides, with FOSS services, you get the option to backup and migrate the data. Do you get that with Discord?
Do you think Copyright law doesn’t exist outside the US? Obviously there are some countries where you might be able to host things of this nature but at that point we are not talking about the kind of software you host.
Yes. Contrary to what some Americans think, the rest of the world isn’t ruled by the US and their often ridiculous laws don’t apply. For instance in this case, neither the code nor the community discussions have anything to do directly with Nintendo. In addition, emulators and reverse engineering are perfectly legal in many places. There are plenty of jurisdictions where such frivolous and preemptive copyright strikes won’t even be tolerated.
Just that Suyu isn’t doing anything illegal or against the law. Emulation is legal. Also reverse engineering if it’s done right in a lot of countries. What discord did here wasn’t because of the law but because they are feared of Nintendo being mad at them.
So how can the piracy subreddit/community exist?
Mainly by being overlooked or being hosted in one of the countries that do not enforce copyright laws.
Oh so you’re saying they could have hosted their shit by renting a server then, glad you managed to reach that conclusion that contradicts your other message.
DMCA ignored hosting is a thing. Usually run out of countries like Russia I think.
If you’re hosting it yourself you’re still legally liable but at least you get a chance to defend yourself instead of being betrayed by your host with no recourse.
Anyway, emulation isn’t illegal so it’s not even clear these developers did anything wrong, but proprietary web 2.0 services shoot first and ask questions never because that’s the best way for them to cover their asses legally.
