  • I really enjoy programming, but generally I dislike cooking. I just want to eat, not spend time preparing to eat.

My experience with cooking has been that because I don’t do it enough, I’m constantly dealing with food expiration dates and having to plan carefully around them.

In comparison, I’ve got some servers that have been running maintenance free for 5+ years. (Probably not the most secure thing, but meh, I don’t have customers other than myself)

I think programmers often have hobbies that are more physical though. For me, I like working on my car because turning bolts and working with my hands lets my brain turn off for a while. I could see cooking and following a recipe being in the same category for others.

  • I don’t think that matters, since when bruteforcimg a passphrase it’s more like using whole words as the characters (or tokens) in the password. If there’s 7776 possible unique words, it doesn’t matter what characters are in the words at all. Just how many password combinations are used.

Side note, this is assuming words without character replacements. If you consider variations with A->@ or B->8 there ends up being significantly more possible unique “words”

  • Honestly the best thing about FOSS is that money isn’t driving all the decisions. Most open-source projects are built because the dev just wants to build something cool or useful, or they’re trying to solve specific problems. Most individual devs don’t really care if their user count goes up every quarter.
Personally I’ve been maintaining a chrome extension for about 10 years, and it’s sat happily with about 7000 users that entire time. I built it because I wanted to use it, and I’ve declined several offers to buy the extension and monetize it.

Lol, $100 would be a deal now. It’s $140-200 for Windows 11 depending on if you get Home or Pro.

I looked up how much it would cost to get a Windows Server license to run in a VM on my linux server, and that’s a minimum of $500 (but possibly more depending on factors that are irrelevant as an individual). I decided I’d run unactivated Win10Home instead with some registry hacks to make things auto-start the way I want. If that stops working, I guess I’ll just stop doing automated Windows CI.

moving wealth from the public into the private

That’s a side effect of capitalism and lobbying (aka bribing) the government for preferential treatment. But it’s kind of the opposite of the point of government. Most businesses are incredibly selfish and will cut every corner they can without the government there to enforce workplace safety, market rules, and policing fraud and theft.

  • It really depends on what you’re measuring. Good luck measuring the distance from a corner if you can’t get 0 to touch the end.

Tape measures are almost always designed with this in mind, so you can hook the end over an edge, or butt it up against something and the measurement will be accurate both ways, since the metal end can slide in or out by just the right amount.

  • I’ve been eating gluten free for 15+ years now, and it’s gotten so much easier now. Though the food definitely costs more if you want any sort of grains.

When I was diagnosed I had basically no symptoms (my mom was also diagnosed). Now if I eat gluten I’ll end up feeling similar to a hangover. It’s amazing what your body can get used to if you’re eating it constantly.

Now that I’ve been eating gluten free, several of my other food sensitivities and allergies have become more mild or gone away entirely. Milk was a big one when I was younger (tested negative for lactose, but the milk proteins can look similar to gluten to your immune system).

  • Seize who’s assets exactly? The second you draw a line and say anyone on the other side has fewer rights than you, you’re falling right in line with those same right-wing policies.

There is no way to define a law against “right-wingers” that doesn’t infringe on basic rights like freedom of opinion and freedom from discrimination. You can’t punish people for being part of a group. You need to point to something specific that each individual has done that is illegal before prosecuting. Anything less and society will break down into fascism.
