I think mkdocs is easier than hugo but less flexible in terms of capability. However it serves all my needs (list of webpages accessible from a central frontpage)

It depends on your usecase. We need more detail regarding what application (gui/cui/open source/proprietary/custom) you are trying to use
If the application doesn’t exist in those platforms, it’s a different story. You might need to use distrobox or docker. Don’t use nix because it’s overkill for what you want to do.

There is a leg press machine at my gym which doesn’t go full depth (“for the safety of the clients”). I have to put a bunch of yoga mats behind my back to get any depth. Such a pain to setup.
The only pure-linux issues that I have faced in the last few years are due to Wayland. And it’s not an issue, it’s just the legacy application has not yet embraced Wayland yet. Otherwise it has been smooth sailing for me.
