2 years is still insanely short to me. I had a Nexus 6p from 2016-2020, and a Pixel 5 from 2020-present, and frankly the 6p was still pretty fast and satisfying to use when I traded it in so I can’t imagine wtf anyone needs to upgrade more frequently than that.

I don’t remember which Surface I have, but power issues are the biggest bugbear that have followed me with it the entire time I’ve had it. Firstly chargers for the thing are really fucking sketchy - if it’s not in basically perfect, out-of-the-box condition it simply refuses to connect. And even if the little indicator light turns on that doesn’t mean that the bios “sees” it, which is pretty annoying.

Lately it’s been doing this thing where when I try to wake it up from sleep it takes about a full minute to turn the screen on. This wasn’t an issue until like a week ago, I’ve tried updating everything, reverting back to windows/stock settings - nothing.

Nowadays my surface is just a second screen on my desk that I use to run Stremio, because it just can’t handle anything else - and this is after me being pretty positive on it for most of the time I’ve had it. I guess I’ve had it for a few years, but damn if it wasn’t such a compact design I could probably swap out the power supply or something.

I don’t think a guide is really needed to install Linux

I had a guide and it was still a big learning curve. Linus had a guide and he still bricked his machine trying to install Steam. Imagine your parents or grandparents being told without context to mount an ISO to a USB and set up their BIOS - for 90% of people there is no way in hell they’re installing Linux without a guide unless they can double click an exe and have an install wizard do it for them.

I have this idea to buy a .su domain and host my own email addy. I’m sure all the tools to do so exist on Linux but I haven’t taken the time to really research it yet.

If it’s just a newsletter I would set up a mailbox filter that just sends all of their mail to the trash. GMail makes this pretty easy (highlight a spam message, select “filter messages like these” from the top menu), but idk how to do it on other mail servers.

I think this is a fundamental property of social media. It’s a basic catch-22 - you need new users to attract new users. Sometimes a seismic shift will occur like the migration from MySpace or Digg, but neither of those websites were as big as any of the big social media sites are now, so the gravity well wasn’t nearly as strong.

People will just normalize the new anti-user features and get used to them.

I tend to agree, but more because I think that Linux needs a killer feature to convince people to switch and privacy aint it for most people.

Just the other day I was posting complaining about a thing I was trying to do that should have been simple but Linux made really hard for some reason. Still prefer it to Windows tbh.

I think with the principles Lemmy was made under the fracturing of the community into blocs is basically inevitable. You’ll have the original/developer/“tankie” bloc at lemmy.ml, the more mainstream/liberal bloc at lemmy.world, and all the smaller instances orbiting around and between them some connected to both and some connected to neither.

To do something like you suggest would require a single, centralized instance that lists all the others and tags them to allow users to pick which ones to subscribe to - and if the Lemmy devs did that then we’d be right back to the problems inherent to .

I remember having a chinese-branded one that could fit abooooout thirty mp3s on it. It had one of those buttons that you could click in all four directions or in the center, but to charge or change the songs on it you needed a really hard to find cable.

As a Hexbear user, I personally get paychecks from both Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping for every comment. It’s a pretty sweet gig ngl.

Came to Hexbear because the CTH subreddit was kill and I really hate trying to follow a super active Discord, then TC69 lead the purge of the rightists and it became so good that basically no other website scratches my social media itch anymore. Reddit’s still useful since there’s so much archived content on places like /r/linux but that’s the only reason I go there anymore, Lemmy as a whole seems pretty cool though.

Scotty says he “bought” a boat at one point, but I’ve also seen long explanations that “bought” doesn’t necessarily mean with money and it’s just a common Human expression for when you get something.

I think it’s clear that on Federation worlds you can just rock up to a replicator and get anything that isn’t dangerous (and you can get the dangerous stuff with the right license/permit), but on the frontier/border areas (ie DS9) Federation citizens receive a stipend or a wage so that they can live “on the economy” along with the non-Federation citizens.
