I see a lot of people who share your opinion. I used to work rehabbing sea turtles and EVERY turtle we received alive or dead had straws/bags in their gut. It might not seem super important but those products look more like jellyfish and turtles have poor eyesight.

The nets commercial fishing boats make the most plastic waste by a lot but declining a plastic straw and bringing your own bag to shop WILL save a life.

  • Conservatives painted DEI as providing Equity in a discriminatory way.

IE: We are hiring 100 people; we have set a goal to hire 30 people of color, 20 neurodivergent people, 20 queer folk, and 10 Women but we are NOT setting a goal for Straight White Men.

The narrative has been made that Straight White Men are being excluded from graduate programs because these quotas must be filled.

In this extreme example it looks pretty bad, because we should be striving to hire and place people based on talent and reliability alone.

It is a branding issue. The outrage has nothing to do with what DEI really is but focuses on a rare example that does the opposite of what it was designed to do.

Another example of how the Truth™ is being used to divide us.

Mountains don’t grow in a day. We don’t feel the ground shifting under us.

I would argue the majority of people react to sharp critique by closing themselves off. I know plenty of people that started by reducing their meat intake to a few meals a week. That kind of conversion is the most likely to get results.

So It’s hard to get into the headspace where I could get offended by being called cis but I’ll try. Here is a metaphor that hopefully won’t be too offensive.

Imagine if vegetarians started identifying non-vegetarians en masse with the label “Omnivores”. The first critique would likely be, “But it’s normal for humans to be omnivores; It’s the neutral state!”. That’s how most people, including many allies, feel about being cis. It’s the neutral state to them and doesn’t/shouldn’t require a label.

Obviously context matters but I can see how inflection could make it sound like a slight if someone is already loaded with insecurities.
