It seems like a pain in the neck because of the difficulty of writing code for Android, especially older versions, since the API’s keep changing and the older SDK’s might be hard to find and use (I haven’t tried). It helps if you can root the phone, but that isn’t always easy either. Plus, a phone-sized PC display doesn’t sound that useful. For a wall or desk display, you might be better off with an Inkplate (e-reader with reflective e-paper display) or similar.
Does gnu bc have outstanding bug reports? If not, it doesn’t need updates. Its spec was frozen 30 years ago, more or less. Rather than unmaintained, I’d call it maintenance-free. BIFL software as it were. Sounds great to me.
Seems like a whine, bc is an interactive tool and it’s unusual to use it for anything where its response isn’t instant.
GNU bc is one of the oldest GNU tools and it uses an MP library that RMS banged out in an afternoon or two, I think. It could probably be adapted to use GMP which is very high performance.
Preferring GPL to other licenses seems fine with me, unless I want to work for Amazon without getting paid.
I don’t understand that chart really, but charging speed is carefully controlled in the phone, based on monitoring the battery temperature among other things. They won’t charge from 0% to 80% at 100 watts even if they might hit 100W momentarily under the right conditions. Fast charging is hard on batteries anyway. Make sure you are ok with replacing the battery every so often, if you’re going to fast charge regularly.
I use autotools and don’t remember having such issues.
We have supercomputers in our phones. They can handle it.
Contacts and dialer should maybe be merged. It’s nice to be able to call someone and make notes in that person’s contact page during the call.
Is there some obstacle to writing them? Special SDK privileges or anything like that? Seems like a good thing to degoogle if possible.

If I got an older Pixel I’d run Graphene so np. Right now I’m satisfied with my Moto G. I’ll wait to see what happens with NTN (satellite) messaging in Android 15 since that’s the most interesting feature that my current phone didn’t have.
Ah oh well. Maybe it’s possible to use a USB-C pen drive if you don’t mind a contraption hanging off the port. It could be useful some of the time. Other than Graphene I don’t understand what is so great about Pixels anyway. Maybe this is about the last chance to get a phone that’s not loaded with AI crap though.
Fair enough. I remember thinking the last good one was the 4a since it has a headphone jack and SD slot, iirc. I guess I could do without those if other parts of the proposition were good enough.
Pixels are expensive on introduction but get fairly affordable once they’ve been around for a while. Does the 9 have any real attractions if you’re satisfied with the cameras on older Pixel generations? You can get unused Pixel 6’s and 7’s at budget-phone prices on woot fairly regularly. They seem nice, if you want a Pixel for whatever reason.
This article would be more interesting if it took Grover’s quantum search algorithm into account, and made some kind of physical estimate of its limits. Grover’s algorithm lets you search N items in just sqrt(N) queries.
That won’t happen. At best it will be user replaceable without big hassle. Swappable means you pop off the cover and change the battery in a few seconds without tools. So you can carry a spare charged battery instead of a power bank.
There is that, but then a point case thickens it up again. Anyway there is always someone who says water resistance. I myself would love an 18650-powered phone.
The Galaxy S5 from around 2012 was water resistant but maybe not at ipx68 level and idk about its shock resistance. The Xcover is even more clear cut. And every time the topic comes up, some tech apologist says batteries have to be sealed in the phone because water resistance. But it’s just greed.
This is about installing on a Nexus 5 which is from 2013. Sounds painful.
