Are you trying to connect up to a computer? Look up “USB tethering” in your settings - you should be able to plug your phone into your computer through a USB port and share its data connection no problem. If you’re only using one device, it’s actually better than a mobile hotspot. You can also do it over Bluetooth if for some reason you want lower bandwidth. YMMV as I’m across the pond, but I get stats from my telecom company about my usage and it doesn’t list anything USB tethered as hotspot related so I think it should go under your company’s radar.

But also like, what the absolute fuck man? How? Why?

  • In Australia I had the option to learn Japanese and then when I went over to Europe my school specifically had a Chinese option, both for “facilitating trade and future relations”

Ngl years later I kinda only use my Chinese skills when I’m at the Chinese market and I’m trying to find the right ingredients for something, and I reckon out of my entire class I probably benefited the most out of taking the language. It isn’t the cultural trade exchange they were hoping for…but hey, it’s pretty useful being able to correctly identify stuff when the English stickers they plaster on the label are vague at best and incorrect at worst

Tbh I can’t believe we’re at a point where “keep your cats inside they live longer and don’t risk infection or injury or death” is straight up not enough to convince people to keep their pets which they love and cherish inside. Like I admit I’m biased - I’m a bird person and my main stake in this argument is the local wildlife. But at the same time…it’s kinda ridiculous that people would rather risk all that than bother to entertain and interact with and exercise their cats like you would with most other pets?

Not to mention like in Europe multiple species of native small cats are being pushed out and outbred by feral and outdoor cats

Keep your moggies inside for their sake people! Also for, y’know, all the birds and small mammals killed by them and the fact that your pet can pick up some goddawful diseases from being outdoors and still have a shorter life expectancy than indoor ones

Eh even on farms they’re not the most effective

Sure cats sometimes catch mice, but you know what else also catches mice and is actually native to wherever your area is? Owls.. Owls that are being chased off by said cat.

Let your local raptors do their job people.

  • I wanted to go local and the closest instances were either Finnish or Danish and I went Finnish because I’d rather not accidentally order ten litres of milk every time I try to say something

Also this is where the fountain pen community originally was. They’ve since moved to wayfarer but honestly? I kinda like it here. Small instance and it’s name isn’t just Lemmy.somethingrather like most places are. I do one day want to host my own instance though, so I can have the pride of adding yet another thing to my domain’s umbrella.

  • I honestly I don’t get why people don’t just, y’know, join instances that are more local. It would solve the “everything’s in a different language!” Issue too because now the main foreign language is, y’know, one you speak.

Or - yeah I did the same I joined a Finnish instance because I live right next door and it seemed like the logical thing to do and screw Denmark

  • One downside/senario I’m worried about is what happens when something really bad happens. Like illegal authorities-get-involved bad? Like leaking sensitive government information or a homegrown r/ jailbait situation that the media catches wind of. Stuff can’t be permanently deleted, at least not without nuking everything around it…which people might be tempted to do. And that’s basically turning anything seriously incriminating into essentially an infohazard that could get you nuked because you’re in an instance where someone else from it commented on the thing or something. And any attempt to and defederation from the offending parties probably isn’t the hard shutoff that the authorities would be demanding in such a situation. Even if nothing effectively happens to the greater Federation, it would be a PR nightmare that would probably kill any future attempts of evangelising the platform in the future, especially to bigger communities looking for a new place to stay.

Places like Reddit have mods and admins that worst case scenario, can be the scapegoats. Lemmy doesn’t really have that layer of protection because of how esoteric it is to the layman.

  • I get it’s some form of tracking and that scares people here, but I keep on thinking there must be a way to set up cookies or whatever the right term is so that when you click on a link you’ll automatically get sent to the Lemmy post through your specific instance. I would suggest an extension but I’m personally of the opinion that any site that needs a third party extension (like say, RES or Xkit) to fully work isn’t a well designed site (not to mention it makes evangelising harder because now you gotta sign up for a new confusing thing and download this extension)

Like everyone’s screaming “use smaller instances!!!1!” But like, this issue pretty much tells you “you should be using the same big instances for the best sharing/viewing experience”

  • huh? What’s tumblr got to do with this? Is this about Automattic adding the ability to connect up Tumblr accounts to the fediverse? Because you do know that isn’t the same as the Threads situation right?

It’s very probably going to function like how Wordpress and ActivityPub already functions - as a way to let people look at and interact with your blog from a Mastodon or other instance. And if Wordpress is anything to go by it’ll also probably be limited to self hosted/paid accounts rather than something that everyone can have so the bot/spam/ghost account worry is kinda moot
