Restaurants don’t take steaks off the menu because they aren’t are profitable as salads. One date wants a salad, the other wants steak, they make less profit on the steak plate, but the average of the two is profit enough.

It’s ridiculous to look at any one service of these behemoth monopolies as an island - They are one collective thought, EVERY SINGLE PIECE does not have to be to enshittified to generate the biggest possible profit.

  • An elitist dog whistle built to “other” the “poor” people - people that may have otherwise been successfully socializing or “passing” with wealthy people to the point of the first text message sent. Also a quiet tool for labor discrimination.

Only took them about 20 years of oppression to finally announce they would potentially end the practice.

  • Walled garden, overpriced exploitation of that locked ecosystem ($5000 monitor stand kind of shit), green bubbles/blue bubbles, dominating all tech with their middle of the road/copycat approach where Android was eventually saturated with same type of execs and “gave up” on differentiating until everything was the same sealed back glass rectangle without MICRO SD expansion memory, leading the charge on “brave” feature killing enshitification like removing the headphone jack, plenty more…

  • One of the biggest thing is the actual swipe detection success rate - I have tried heli and others and I find that you need to swipe slower and more precisely for words to register. Also, when wrong word is detected, Swype will typically have the right word suggested in bar above keyboard for a one tap correction, not the case for me on others where no word is often the wrong word is suggested to correct. For example, almost like some of them suggest too literally and lack context - this is tough to describe, so bear worth me, so I try to swipe the word “she” let’s say, and the board detects “the” and the suggested words to correct have more of a relationship to “the”, so think “then” “them” “theirs” maybe, but the logic isn’t starting with other derivations of three letter words ending with “he” that have relevant letters near the “T” on a qwerty keyboard (which Swype feels less likely to do in my experience).

Otherwise, there are customizing options and other UI choices that I prefer with Swype. It’s definitely gotten worse over the years since it stopped being actively supported, but I’m so glad it’s still functional in some capacity. I wish everyone with FOSS skill would really deep to replicate the Swype experience with the APKs still floating around.

Honest question: What makes you think you are qualified to know if they’ve “done anything”? Nova was bought by an analytics(data) company, the danger wasn’t in them aesthetically changing nova or its core functionality, the danger was in them keeping you thinking nothing has changed but aggressively/unethically selling all the data about you so others can exploit and manipulate you.

Simple example is, making a predictive model of when you’re most likely sad based on context clues and general device usage and then kleenex buys that data, in aggregate. They then use it to predict when they can raise the price of tissues for surge pricing in your area when you’re most vulnerable and least price sensitive. This is a slightly silly example work “big Kleenex” as the bad guy, but hopefully you get the idea.

Add to it if you use any of nova middle layer services (e.g. A nova search widget instead of browser search, sesame shortcuts, etc). That’s all increased fidelity they get on a data profile of who you are at any given time so that they can sell it to others to target and harass you. That is what the new nova is, quietly. You won’t get a knock on your door to ask you if you approve, it has just happened already.

    More hypothetical examples:

    • We detect increasing frequency of you launching the travelocity app, means you’re getting more desperate to book, prices go up on your app, increasing more and more between today and the departure date you’ve been searching.

    • You downloaded two pregnancy tracker apps in a week, means that several companies can now invest in spamming you with predatory social and direct mail advertising and you’re employer can consider finding alternative cause to fire you to not absorb the upcoming costs of delivery/care and parental leave.

    • You not having any Christian/bible material or apps on your phone means there’s a high percentage that you aren’t a practicing Christian (or conversely, you having a Quran app downloaded). Your house gets a big red X on a map for an app funded by dark money Christo-fascist, Christian nationalists quietly creating a directory of “good” people and “bad” people that your neighbors with red hats and flags on their raised trucks can eventually download and access freely to “keep an eye out”.

That last one is NUTS! You’re crazy! That’s ridiculous! and then…
