  • I can’t use the iPhone 3 I have in a drawer, even though there’s nothing wrong with it. Meanwhile my HTC that runs Android 1.2 still works with Google maps just fine.

I was also pissed off when all the OSX software dropped support for single-core Intel processors which rendered some very expensive 2 year old machines at work useless for anything Mac-specific.

For context, my Dad is still using a PC I built out of parts recovered from a skip in 2008, and it works just fine.

  • Kai trucks are made to fit within a size limit for vehicles in inner cities in Japan, as a result there’s a whole load of odd tiny vehicles still available today.

The closest we get in Europe now are the “heavy quadricycles”, but again they’re made for a specific legal niche (or for specific jobs, like the Aixam Mega Truck for things like park maintenance).

Either way, small vehicles are unfortunately unsafe because there’s no crumple zones, so outside of slow-burning town centers they’re a bad idea (and in town centers it’s better to not have cars at all) so we’re unlikely to see more cute tiny vans in the future … except for things like the electric truck you saw, which can cover commercial needs in zero emissions areas, but again specialised use.

  • Skating used to be whole life, my right leg has been held together by a metal rod for the last 7 years now.

Like you, it was caused by an avoidable miskate that was my own fault. I can still get on skates (though that took about 3 years) and I’m limited to doing that for about half an hour and can’t move fluidly.

For me the solution wasn’t to do everything I could to continue doing the thing I loved, but rather to let it go. These days I ride (small, quiet) motorbikes, walk my dogs, and have recently taken up archery.

Had I not broken my leg there’s a diversity of experiences I’d have missed out on, because I was enraptured with The Thing. There’s more to the world than one single hobby!

If you have close friends and family, do try and talk through how you’re feeling with them, and think about seeing a therapist - these sorts of limitations are hard to adapt to for everyone!

I wish you good luck in whatever sort of adventures you have next :-)
