Here’s where the ‘86’ came from.
Back in the day, there was a speakeasy with two doors. The entry door was through a small courtyard and the exit door was onto the street. If you knocked on the street door, which had the address on it, you couldn’t get in. If you got obnoxious, you’d be thrown out the street door. That door had an ‘86’ on it.
Old time comic W. C. Fields was once asked how to become successful.

In 1960, minimum wage was $1.00/hour and the average home was $11,000.00 In 1968, when Richard Nixon took office, ‘middle class’ meant one Union job supporting a family of four. By the time Bush Sr. left office in 1992 “middle class” was two college jobs to support the household.

I had a long flight so I took along Reamde.
I’d read it twice before, but damned if it didn’t hook me up again. I got to the first airport around 10 am and didn’t get home until 3 am. Saved my sanity.
For the uninitiated, Reamde involves the kidnapped niece of a billionaire game maker; the game is really fun and also a money laundering operation. There are terrorists, Right Wing militias, undercover spies, demented science fiction authors, and a bear skin rug.

I’ve been telling people to read ‘Cryptonomicon’ for decades.
It tells two interwoven stories. Back in WW2 the grandfather is involved in proactive missions to keep the Nazis from learning the Allies had broken their codes, and in the late 1990’s the grandson is trying to start an online bank
It’s a cheap and easy way to teach children to visualize.

Speaking as a nontech person, I can assure you that none of us care in the slightest.
Just give us the new address and we’ll change it. We might curse you for making us do the work, but probably we’ll feel like badasses when we do it in only three hours.
17·6 months agoI grew up in New York City. We heard a lot about Unions in our history classes, because most of our parents [and all the teachers] were in a Union. Figured that was the norm for the whole country, because what kid really thinks about how text books are chosen?
Recently heard from another poster that their books siad that Unions were useful in the past, but were bad now because they interfered with the global economy.

New York City is moving away from people paying for subway/bus rides with a pre-paid card or cash and going to a system where you pay with your credit card or smart wallet. Nice way to quietly monitor everyone’s location and habits.
