Always thought that was supposed to be the point of civilization or society, to make life a little more fair
Really the expression is about y’know, dying of a freak accident or getting cancer or these sorts of things we have limited or no control over, not about the consequences of an artificial hierarchy that is very purposefully systematically enforced by the rich in class war. There’s nothing natural about the conservative idea of meritocracy.
