I don’t see the ad ones since I have a pihole, but the articles that play some unrelated (or even related, idgaf) news video get the same treatment.

I did not consent to give you that mobile bandwidth, website, and that’s fucking rude. I have limited data cuz I’m a cheap fuck, and I don’t want to waste it on bullshit I don’t care about.

What is the goal when a company uses this type of ad? You can’t pay attention to it, so you have no idea what the video is saying. The video is always hidden somewhere, so you can’t watch it. All it does is make people back away or exit out completely.

Because everything is just everyone exploiting everyone else. Yes, they know you won’t engage with it, but they can still sell it as an impression to advertisers as if you did. Everyone gets screwed; we get a shitty web experience, websites have to load their pages with unnecessary bloat to survive, and corporations are paying for advertisements that get clicked off in under a second. Literally nobody is benefiting from today’s Internet. The enshitification is quickly reaching critical mass

the media companies also own (owned by?) the telecoms and they indirectly profit when you use up more of your mobile data quota.
