Do you know anything about opensource?

“Infinity for Reddit” uses AGPLv3 License.

    • You can modify, distribute.
    • You must include copyright, include licence, disclose source…

    https://www.tldrlegal.com/license/gnu-affero-general-public-license-v3-agpl-3-0

Didn’t stole anything, it continued a project, and the name is being discussed on other post.

That’s how opensource works, you don’t stole, you improve other peoples works and give them credit for their work.

Did you know that most of the apps for Lemmy are opensource and use other opensource projects?

Did you know that Google Chrome uses a browser engine that was created by KDE then improved by Apple, then Google forked it and change the name to Blink.

PS: Trump stole the code from Mastodon, remove the creator credits and call it their own.

Heh, as an addendum to that last bit, Truth actually got a C&D order from the Mastodon creator(s) and had to make the source code available, iirc. I know Gab faced that too.

Reusing the name is the shitty part, especially if you’re not calling it unofficial.

Why? It’s the same thing, just pull it and compile if you don’t like this guy putting his name on it

Because if the original developer wants to make a Lemmy app, and the name Infinity is already taken by a random person?

Not to mention a vast majority of people don’t realize it’s not the original developer, which is shady.

It’s garbage behaviour to rip a name without making any changes to it, or by at least having unofficial somewhere.

Ok I get where you’re coming from. I guess my standards have lowered due to the amount of straight up spamware copying the names of other apps. To me, it’s not a big deal to create an app of the same name using the original source code. But it is disingenuous. I agree with you now, good point.

Not really, it’s not even the same name. It’s called “Infinity for Lemmy,” where as the original app is called “Infinity for Reddit.” There should be no confusing them. Secondly, I don’t think that DocileAlligator would disapprove of the work being done here either. It carries on the legacy of the app he helped make, and it also carries on the spirit of what open-source can achieve.

Sync for Reddit and Sync for Lemmy are both by the same developer.

Boost for Reddit and Boost for Lemmy are both by the same developer.

Infinity for Reddit and Infinity for Lemmy are NOT by the same developer.

                See the problem?

Option 1 and option 2 are closed source. Option 3 is open source under the AGPL license.

See why you’re wrong? Deal with it, the dev for Infinity for Lemmy has already said he’s looking for a new name anyways. Go to the thread for suggestions and add your own thoughts for a new name there.

Sync for Reddit is not open source

Boost for Reddit is not open source

Infinity for Reddit is open source

The Reddit developer allowed to it to be used in this way by making it open source, the point of which being to be modified and forked by other developers. The Infinity for Lemmy developer is already changing the name with the intent of making it known that it’s a separate project. Infinity for Lemmy is only a temporary name.

I don’t see an issue when the creator of Infinity for Reddit specifically licensed the app in a way that this was allowed to happen, especially when credit was properly given. The first time that I saw someone mention the naming thing, the Lemmy developer made plans to change the name in the replies, as far as I can see, there was no malicious intent and they just wanted to do something nice for the community and put proper credit to the original developer.

                  Edit: Reworded for clarity.

I don’t care about the open source part. Cool? Not sure why that matters or why you’re focusing on it.

I’m just saying that using Infinity for Lemmy when you’re not the original dev, without making it VERY CLEAR you’re not the original dev, is scummy.

So many people think this is the original dev, and it’s not.

I’m glad it took until other people called him out to talk about it. Should’ve never used it in the first place. Also it shouldn’t take 2+ weeks to change the name. Shady behaviour.

You know that the original developer can join the project and continue his work, the repository can go to a organization with more developers working on same project, that’s how projects gets bigger.

KeePassXC for example, started as KeepassX-HTTP (fork of KeePassX), then more people join the project, and change the name for KeepassXC (C stands for community) and become an organization, instead of a single developer it’s a collaborative project with other developers.
