I want to start a discussion about a few things that I have in mind. I want to bring this app closer to the community and I’d like your opinions on some topics.
The name
Firstly, regarding the name: when I began this project, I initially viewed it as just another side project for myself. This led me to name it “Infinity for Lemmy.” The name made sense to me at the time because I was creating a fork of Infinity specifically for Lemmy. However, there are downsides to this name. For one, it’s quite lengthy and doesn’t fit on the screen in some instances. Additionally, it may give the impression that the original developer is associated with this project, which isn’t the case.
So, to better differentiate this fork from the original project, I want to adopt a shorter name. It should still reflect its origins but also make clear that this is a distinct project.
My proposal is to name it “LemmInfinity,” but I’m open to suggestions.
The icon
The second topic I’d like to address is the icon. While I don’t necessarily dislike the current one, I believe there are talented individuals in the community who could craft something much better.
In the coming days, I plan to launch a contest. Participants can submit icon designs for a week, after which the community will decide on the best submission through a public vote, similar to what Voyager did.
Conclusion
Our project, with its unique trajectory, deserves a distinct identity. While the name and icon have served their purpose up to this point, it’s necessary that we evolve to distinguish ourselves from the original project and embrace the community’s talents. The proposed name change and upcoming icon contest are steps in that direction. Let’s come together as a community and shape the next chapter of our project’s journey.
TLDR; I’m considering renaming the project to “LemmInfinity” or something the community approves to differentiate it from the original. Also, there’ll be an icon design contest soon, allowing the community to vote on a new icon, similar to Voyager’s approach. Your feedback and participation are encouraged!

I’d give it the name Definity.
Not a fan of word plays on the word Lemmy like some suggest, although it would probably also be fair, considering access to the whole Lemmy network. It’s a bit ironic, the name Infinity would fit it really well.
Ed: Eternity works too.
I agree. I really love puns but in this case it would sound a bit off. Definity is a good name.

Im personally not a huge fan of the portmanteaus. Its hard to make a good one with the word Lemmy.
Edit: In the same vein, it could also be called Eon.
I really like this suggestion. It’s distinct from Infinity yet related in meaning.
The longer portmanteaus that have been suggested might also cause rather ugly line breaking midword in some launchers.
I approve of this.
Lemmfinity is just sitting there begging to be picked up.

I just saw the app on f-droid a few minutes ago and downloaded it immediately, I understand wanting to change the name but it did help me find it, I loved the old infinity and haven’t felt properly at home on lemmy till now, thank you
I think you should keep it infinity for now , since people know the reddit branding and moving forward when the client is well know you can change !

I vote for keeping Infinity for Lemmy, because that’s how Infinity for Reddit users will hear about Lemmy and get convinced to use it.
Also, it allows me to do this :
LemmInfinity seems too lengthy IMO. I’d go for something simple like “Infinite” or “Lemmy Infinite”.
Apps also only had to switch to “for Reddit” in the past due to Reddit taking issue with app names beginning with Reddit (e.g., Reddit Relay, Reddit Sync, Reddit is Fun all had to rename).
Lemmfinity?
I think “Aleph” could be interesting. A common theme for forks of other projects is to have a name that’s a sort of synonym of the original. In set theory, the Aleph numbers represent different orders of infinity. The “normal” infinity we think of is the first Aleph number, and there are an infinite amount of other Aleph numbers. So, “Aleph” could be this app’s way of acknowledging the “Infinity” it comes from, and still distinguish itself as something unique.

Lemmfinity definitely works, & I actually like the current icon, its distinguishable, but still maintains the roots of its origins…
